Heading west along the Eyre Highway and at the start of the Nullarbor Plain, I reached the small town of Penong. Having read somewhere that if you headed south from this town to the coastline of The Great Australian Bight, you would come across a renowned surfing spot known as Cactus Beach at Point Sinclair. To my surprise a stunning beautiful seascape appeared before me. This was Lake MacDonnell.
Lake MacDonnell has a unique beauty about it. The sand dunes that rise up from the shoreline have an appearance of soft meringue like peaks with just a hint of burnt sugar. The twisting course of the shallow salt lake is shaped by the low growing mallee scrub that is a feature of the Nullarbor Plain . The crystal clear water reflects the blue sky and sand dunes along with revealing a hint of the pink salt crystals by the edges and the yellow algaes that grow within it.
